MCA Nepal has put in place strong Environment and Social Protection (ESP) measures and will ensure both ETP and RMP implementation involves rigorous identification, analysis and mitigation measures in full compliance with national policies and laws requirements for environmental and social standards, and continuous engagement with stakeholders to seek their inputs and build support for the projects.
The ETP is classified as a Category A project in accordance with MCC Environmental Guidelines (2010). This also implies that 7of the 8 International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards, which are incorporated by reference in the MCC Environmental Guidelines, will apply to MCA-Nepal projects. The ETP will have some unavoidable environmental and social impacts, such as tree cutting, land acquisition, and resettlement. Having carried out a detailed environment and social assessment, MCA-Nepal has put in place measures to ensure minimal environmental and social impacts, and to address all identified risks through relevant compensation, mitigation, or management measures in consultation with stakeholders.
The RMP is classified as Category B under MCC’s Environmental Guidelines where the proposed activities have potentially limited adverse environmental or social risks, or impacts are fewer, generally site-specific, largely reversible, and readily addressed through mitigation measures. Environmental or social impacts caused by construction activities, such as temporary road closures, excavation and borrow pits, noise, dust, and worker and community health and safety, will be managed through targeted environmental and social management plans based on the findings of an abbreviated environmental and social impact assessment.
